Oils and Oral Health

A few years ago I was introduced to essential oils by an experience with Thieves oil.  I was excited, therefore, to discover Thieves Fresh Essence Plus mouthwash. This weekend I received my second bottle in the mail!  As I've sought a more natural approach to wellness, I've begun to pay more attention to what I put into my body. This eventually led to me reading the labels on our favorite mouthwash.  I discovered alcohol, flavoring, benzoic acid, sodium saccharin (a petroleum based sugar substitute), sodium benzoate, D&C yellow no. 10 and FD&C green no.3.  I said no to the alcohol, synthetic dyes, and innocuous flavoring and sought out an alternative.  Thieves mouthwash, with a blend of therapeutic grade essential oils, is a more natural option.

Oil pulling is another practice that I use to support healthy teeth and gums.  It is an Ayurvedic detoxification practice that can reduce harmful organisms in the oral cavity. I use organic coconut oil, which has natural antimicrobial properties. First thing in the morning, I put approximately 1 tablespoon in my mouth and swish it around for 15-20 minutes and then brush my teeth. I recommend spitting into your toilet bowl after oil pulling to avoid clogging up your sink.

Dental heath is particularly important for women who are pregnant or trying to conceive. Some studies have shown an association between dental infections and preterm birth. Certain conditions such as pregnancy gingivitis (inflammation of the gums around the teeth) can more problematic for women who already have this condition prior to pregnancy.  You can also affect your baby's risk of developing cavities by transmitting cavity-causing bacteria when you share eating utensils with your little one or  lick her pacifier.

Oral heath is important for overall health and can influence your risk for chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. It can also affect your risk for respiratory diseases. For those local to North Georgia, take advantage of the opportunity this week to take an in-depth look at the importance of oral health with Say Ahh the movie.
